Publication of Quarterly Carers’ Statistics for Northern Ireland (April - June 2020)

The Department of Health (DoH) has today published Quarterly Carers’ Statistics for Northern Ireland (April - June 2020).

This publication of quarterly figures relates to assessments and re-assessments offered to carers in Northern Ireland. A carers’ assessment looks at each carer as an individual with their own personal circumstances, and will identify any particular needs they may have as a result their caring duties.

During quarter ending 30 June 2020:

Carers Assessments

• A carers' assessment was offered to 2,789 carers in Northern Ireland during the quarter ending 30 June 2020. This represented a 32% decrease on the number of assessments offered in the previous quarter, and a decrease of 33% when compared to the same quarter in 2019. The Health and Social Care Trusts have reported that this decrease is due to the impact of COVID-19.
• Of the 2,789 carers’ assessments offered, 54% (1,503) were accepted / completed and 46% (1,286) were declined.
• Those carers caring for someone in the Family and Childcare / Children with Disabilities  client groups were the most likely to accept an offer of an assessment, whereas those caring for someone in the Older People client group were most likely to decline an offer of an assessment.

Carers Reassessments

• A carers' reassessment was offered to 962 carers in Northern Ireland during the quarter ending 30 June 2020. This represented a 3% decrease on the number of assessments offered in the previous quarter, and a decrease of 22% when compared to the same quarter in 2019.
• Of the 962 carers’ reassessments offered, 67% (642) were accepted / completed and 33% (320) were declined.
